I believe that Rome is better as an empire than a republic. Personally, I think that for an advanced civilization to not only thrive, but survive in general, there must be a leader of some form. The Roman emperors brought order to the state and kept it in control instead of having the Patricians rule over the Plebeians. As a republic there was no equality in Rome. It was like a constant civil war between the two social classes. When Augustus Caesar was given the power of the emperor, some peace was restored as he wanted what was best for Rome. The fighting would come to an end and he could make the decisions.
