Abraham Lincoln’s speech was brought about by the Civil War in America. It was a hard time for the citizens of the United States as not only did they lose many loved ones in battle, but the country was divided and at war with itself, or at least the two halves(Union vs. Confederacy). Pericles’ funeral speech was to the Athenian peoples at the beginning of the Peloponnesian War. This, like the one in America, was a civil war with Athens and Sparta fighting each other. These were the two dominant powers in Greece at the time. Abraham Lincoln’s speech is of higher quality than Pericles speech for his sensitivity to the people and admiration of the men he is talking about.

Viking Mascots
Vikings were not only present in the ancient world. They are present today in many team mascots. A mascot for a team is supposed to bring humor, fun, and and spirit to the crowd. A team mascot should also be somewhat intimidating to the opponent. You want to make the offenders afraid of you and what better way to make a startling impression than with a Viking? So many peope believe that the Vikings were barbarians that pillaged villages, and this is very true. That is exactly what the Vikings did. So, if you want your team to scare your opponent before the match even begins, make the Viking your mascot.

Viking Attire

What many cartoons and our culture depict as an accurate viking is false. One may see, on TV, a "viking" dressed in heavy clothing with a large stomach and a horned helmet. They are portrayed as barbarous creatures that had no thought for life as they pillaged towns. This view is not supported by any evidence. There is nothing to even suggest that the Vikings wore helmets with horns. There has been speculation, though, that a horned helmet was used in certain ceremonies, but it is still rare. This does not change the fact that the vikings still raided villages, but it does seem to be that they did not look as barbaric as they acted. The viking attire, for a long time now, has been misconstrued.
